Another weird little ratty piece of L.A. funk flittered away recently with the loss of downtown’s TV Café. The junky little all-night dining spot cluttered with rock posters, vending machines, video games and a bunch of TV’s was demolished and is to be replaced with a sterile Yoshinoya Beef Bowl. The little orange and red dive at Alameda and Olympic started life as a mod Sambo’s coffee shop in the ‘60s and during its run as the 24-hour-a-day TV Café slowly accumulated the barnacle-like color and character some of us loved. I highly doubt Yoshinoya is planning a giant plastic burger, fries and animal menagerie on the roof. If Austin and Portland can keep it weird, why can’t we?
