The Tavis Smiley Show opens with a long shot of the L.A. skyline. What’s with the building that looks like a carton of french fries?

Sir, I’m afraid to inform you that you’ve got McDonald’s on the brain. Those aren’t french fries, they’re fireworks, and that crumpled carton is the Walt Disney Concert Hall, Frank Gehry’s L.A. masterpiece and the pinnacle of high culture in our fair city. The footage was shot during the venue’s gala opening in 2003, but rest assured, soon it will perplex you no longer. This month Smiley is premiering a new opening-credits sequence, featuring Hollywood Boulevard, L.A. Live, and Disney Hall—sans the colorful explosions.
