Take A French Dip At Cole’s On Sunday


More heated than the rivalries of USC Vs. UCLA or Garfield Vs. Roosevelt, The battle over the origin of the French Dip sandwich has been raging in downtown Los Angeles for over a century. Philippe The Original and Cole’s both claim to have invented the glorious roast beef concoction and continue to serve slightly different versions of the sandwich. Philippe’s does have better parking, more neon and a new happy hour, but Cole’s is going all out by celebrating “Repeal Day” (the 1933 end of prohibition) this Sunday with a bartending competition, a 3-piece jazz band, an actual bathtub full of gin and free French dips for the first 200 guests.
