I took a spin around the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica recently for the Los Angeles Modernism Show. The much larger and more ambitious Palm Springs Modernism Week is really kicking our mod butt, but more than fifty vendors brought out their showpieces to Santa Monica and again, I’m stunned at the breadth and depth of what they dig up. I particularly enjoyed a river of shiny red frogs with backpacks, this wild 10-foot-tall Navajo-meets-spacemen tapestry plucked from the childhood home of Glendale City Councilwoman / Planet Glass proprietress Laura Friedman, and perhaps most shocking, a series of sculptures created by a member of my own family that were sold at his estate sale. The evening benefitted P.S. Arts and sent some money to fund kids arts projects. The Palm Springs show is bigger, but ours has more surprises.
