Slide Show: Mini Modernism Week Kicks Off Tourist Season in Palm Springs

The day that summer ends the tourist season in Palm Springs begins. For fans of modern architecture in the desert it culminates with Modernism Week in February when thousands arrive from around the world to buy spindly leg sofas and get drunk in Frank Sinatra’s house. The runaway success of the summit has led to a new mini Modernism Week fall preview starting October 9. Start making reservations and waxing the GTO for more late night parties, furniture, art, and architecture tours via car, foot, bike, and a double decker bus with Charles Phoenix. There’s dinner and cocktails with artist Danny Heller at the Hotel Lautner and a very exclusive visit to Sunnylands, the former estate of Walter Annenberg that has hosted presidents from Nixon to Obama. Peter Moruzzi will be presenting images from his latest book Palm Springs Paradise on October 11.  Ride along for Moruzzi’s jaunty road trip through the desert oasis in its mid-century heyday with these newly digitized images from the Palm Springs Historical Society.
