Gabrieleños? Tongvas? What’s actually the correct name for the indigenous peoples of Los Angeles? Depends on whom you ask. Some native peoples use Gabrielino, an Anglicized version of the name the Spanish called them. Some prefer Tongva, a modified version of a word describing a particular village and its inhabitants near San Gabriel. And some identify as Kizh, a term describing both the dome-shaped dwellings once used in the region and the folks who lived in them.
