My Dinner With Emo

My favorite vaudeville-style magician Rob Zabrecky appeared to a packed house at the Steve Allen Theater last night. His act combines classic elements of séance, song and the variety arts into a wonderfully transportive and disorienting fantasy and I love it. I kept running into friends on the way out and stopped to chat with my old pal, histotainer Charles Phoenix. Charles is putting together this way-cool expedition to Anaheimland next month that sounds fantastic. Anyhoo, I think it was Charles that suggested we round up a gang for a late night snack and I was all in. Charles pulled his bright orange muscle car into Pazzo Gelato in Silver Lake and Emo Phillips and Rusty Lemorande spilled out. Emo is Emo and Lemorande has done all kinds of neat stuff like Captain Eo and an adaptation of Journey To The Center Of The Earth. Neat! We didn’t really talk about movies but the conversation ran from Jack Parsons and Noam Chomsky to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival to Jean Eugène Robert-Houdin and an automaton museum in Monaco. Far out stuff! I love this town. So, the moral of the story is to always stay after the show, always make new friends and be sure to see good shows to begin with. Oh, and if you’re wondering, Emo and I both enjoyed the baked pear gelato.
