Almost fifty years ago, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest
author Ken Kesey
and a gaggle of his beatnik friends packed their art supplies, LSD and myriad camera equipment into a converted school bus nicknamed Furthur
and set out to visit the 1964 New York World’s Fair
. Their encounters with Jack Kerouac
, Timothy Leary
and Allen Ginsberg
along the way were captured in rich color on 16mm film that these proto-hippies never got around to editing. The new film Magic Trip
dissects and resurrects the road trip made famous in Tom Wolfe’s Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test.
Their first stop was Los Angeles where they cruised the Sunset Strip and marveled at out tropical scenery. The Nuart will host a Q&A with filmmaker Alison Ellwood after the 7:30 shows on Friday and Saturday. She will also introduce the 10pm show on Friday. Far out!
