I’ve read that Hollywood Park racetrack is closing, but bands play there from time to time. What gives?

The Inglewood park is in the final stretch. For six months of the year the ponies still run (they’re simulcast on video the rest of the year), as they’ve been doing since 1938. But horse racing is down on its luck. That explains the “Friday Night Live” concert series that hosted Devo this summer (I missed a chance to wear my energy dome hat). When the real estate market picks up, the San Francisco developer who bought the park in 2005 plans to put close to 3,000 homes and a shopping center on the lot, which is about the size of Disneyland and Knott’s Berry Farm combined but won’t be nearly as much fun.
