Is L.A. still the bank robbery capital of the United States?

The latest FBI statistics are in, and once again they confirm that Southern California leads the nation in heists. Keep in mind, though, that the number of bank robberies has plunged here as elsewhere. Our region played host to 401 holdups in 2009, nearly half as many as nine years before. But if you find yourself standing in the teller line at Wells Fargo and the guy in front of you is wearing a Lincoln beard or a cockeyed toupee, run for the exit—the “Dishonest Abe” and “Bad Rug” serial bandits (for real) are still at large.
