Los Angeles will get new signs, and they will be blue. But cool? That will depend on your taste in typefaces. To meet new legibility standards set by the Federal Highway Administration, the city will change from Highway Gothic, dating from the 1940s, to Clearview, a simpler, leaner, more contemporary style. You might recognize it from the AT&T logo. L.A. will replace its signs as they wear out. The feds want the job done by 2018. Let it take forever. I prefer Highway Gothic, with its lumbering charm.
