I don’t understand how those lights in the pavement on the 110 freeway are supposed to help direct traffic. They are so bright, I’m surprised they’re not causing accidents.

    Just remember the new Caltrans slogan: “When the lights shine, don’t cross the line.” In January the northbound 110 at the transition to the 5 north—a notorious bottleneck—became the first highway in California to introduce a “dynamic lane.” The LEDs embedded between the lanes are intended to create a center line bright enough to intimidate drivers so they won’t cut each other off. The system is still too new for safety statistics.
