Every time I drive to Santa Monica, I pass under that metal arch above Wilshire Boulevard at Franklin Street. Is it supposed to mean something?

Excuse me, but that is no mere arch—that’s art! Tony DeLap’s sculpture, called Big Wave, marks the border between L.A. and Santa Monica. DeLap says he was inspired by Russian constructivism and stage magic when he created the steel piece, which extends 42 feet across the busy boulevard and was installed in 1989. Last year Santa Monica spent $75,000 to restore the span and bedazzle it with blue LEDs.
