This week on the Ask Chris blog, we’re going to highlight some of our favorite documentary films about Los Angeles. Harry Pallenberg and Morgan Neville (who won an Oscar for Twenty Feet from Stardom) spent years producing easygoing feel-good TV for Huell Howser. When they set out to explain Los Angeles themselves, they were free to dig deeper and embrace the dark side. They are experts at unearthing historic footage no living person has ever seen and also in extracting the simple essence of complicated arguments from cultural figures including Joan Didion, David Hockney, and Mike Davis. With the exception of noir king James Ellroy, the others bask in sunshine, often in the backseat of a convertible. Sit back and enjoy these drives through lost L.A.
