When U.S. Postal service art director Phil Jordan visited the Museum of Neon Art in downtown Los Angeles he got an idea for a new postage stamp. The “Celebrate!” stamp, released in March, features a black background enlivened with multicolored swirls and circles of bent neon. Jordan worked with the museum staff to select Flektro, run by Van Nuys artist Michael Flechtner whose contemporary neon work has been in several exhibitions at the museum. The Americana at Brand is hosting a special kickoff for the exuberant new stamps Saturday afternoon from 4-6 on the main lawn. The free event will feature collectible indicia-stamped envelopes, an artists’ signing, a neon display the stamp is based on and the 1957 Chevrolet that delivered the artwork to Washington, DC. Later this year the museum moves into it’s new home on Brand Blvd., directly across from the Americana.
