Today would have been the 101st birthday of the late, great photographer Julius Shulman. I can still hear him describing his birthday as “10/10/10.” Los Angeles magazine editor Mary Melton wrote this great piece on the artist in 2009. He and his camera were witnesses to the birth of our modern city and he remains a tremendous inspiration for admirers around the world. In 2005 the Getty Research Institute acquired his entire photo collection. In conjunction with the Getty’s Pacific Standard Time initiative, the Craig Krull gallery is currently exhibiting Shulman’s work through October 29th at Bergamot Station. Go and see some of the reasons we love Uncle Julius so much.
