Ask Chris: Yo Quiero…Hickory Bell?

Q: I remember a fast-food restaurant called Hickory Bell from when I was a kid. Was that related to Taco Bell?

A: Ding-Ding! You win! In 1970, Taco Bell founder Glen Bell approved the idea of adding a string of faux-Southern barbecue joints to some of his chain’s larger locations. The tiny drive-thrus were open for about a year in Canoga Park, Lawndale, and Manhattan Beach. Customers weren’t so hot on the idea and the corn pones were ditched, but the corn tortillas stayed.
