Ask Chris: I Was Waiting for the Subway at the Hollywood and Vine Metro Station and Noticed the Ceiling is Decorated with Thousands of Old Film Reels. Where Did Those Come From?

Our in-house historian has the answer

Magú and Miralles may sound like a vaudeville act, but artist Gilbert “Magú” Luján and architect Adolfo Miralles were the creators of the “Hooray for Hollywood” project for Metro. The more than 20,000 shipping reels they used for the installation were purchased for 25 cents each from a Burbank film recycler at the start of the digital revolution in the late 1990s.
