Q: A friend said the California Incline in Santa Monica is to be demolished. Isn’t it a landmark?
A: While the 84-year-old roadway is indeed eligible for the National Register of Historic Places, it’s also riddled with cracks and has exposed rebar. With no preservation group presenting opposition to the City of Santa Monica’s plan to replace it, and with the federal government footing nearly 90 percent of the bill, down it goes later this year. In case you’re inclined (oops!) to feel sentimental, look for the commemorative placard on the new ramp when it opens in 2016.
