Ask Chris: On The Rocks

Q: Why are there two rock-filled doorways along the incline below Palisades Park?

A: It might be Atlas who holds up the earth in mythology, but in Santa Monica it’s two drainage tunnels built into the bluffs by city engineers in the 1930s. Without these water vents, the area might have eroded away. Perforated pipes were installed to take over for the original system, and the rocks exist as the world’s heaviest Keep Out sign.
