Ask Chris: If Someone Gets on the Bus Without Paying, Is There a “No Fare” Button the Driver Can Hit?

Our in-house historian has the answer

There is a button, though it’s not a prize buzzer. Fare evaders are subject to a $75 fine, but with only 92 inspectors checking 2,450 buses in the Metro system, punishment will likely be limited to a stink eye from the driver. The purpose of the button is to identify which lines have the most fare shirkers.
