Ask Chris: Does L.A. Have a Space Club with Its Own Observatory?

Our in-house historian has the answer

Yes, and it’s out of this world. In 1926, 30 astronomy lovers founded the Los Angeles Astronomical Society, and 89 years later some of its 500-plus members meet at the observatory in Monterey Park’s Garvey Ranch Park each Wednesday to make telescopes and chat about space. Membership costs $45 a year, but access to the observatory—which opened in the 1960s—is free.
