Just like we know spring has arrived when El Cholo brings out the green corn tamales and fall is here when the the Santa Ana winds start to howl, you can tell it’s strawberry season when the Donut Man in Glendora starts making his famous strawberry donuts – and it kicks off today. Owner Jim Nakano has been slicing and glazing the big berries since 1974 when he and his wife took over a vintage roadside stand called Foster’s Donuts and made it their own. The shop’s other creations, like raised donuts with peanut butter filling or the famous striped Tiger Tail are delicious, but the giant pastry filled with fruit is a true wonder of Route 66 that deserves a special road trip. The shop is open 24 hours and the longest lines are often after midnight. Time it right and you can enjoy your donut hot off the assembly line.
