This week was filled with exciting new music including the sophomore album from Compton native Roddy Ricch, the first single from late singer Aaliyah in nearly a decade, and an intoxicating single/visual from multi hyphenate FKA Twigs. These are some of our favorite releases.
More than two years after releasing his debut album Please Excuse Me for Being Antisocial—which was jam-packed with chart topping hits including “The Box” and “High Fashion”—Roddy Ricch has unveiled his sophomore project titled Live Life Fast. The 18-track album includes star-studded features from fellow L.A. musicians Ty Dolla $ign and Alex Isley (daughter of Ernie Isley from the Isley Brothers), Future, Lil Baby, Jamie Foxx, Takeoff from the Migos, and more. The Compton native and Grammy award winner also released a luxurious video for his new single “25 million.” Another standout track on the album is “moved to miami” featuring Atlanta rapper Lil Baby. Just months after Aaliyah’s catalog became available on streaming services and platforms for the first time, a new posthumous track has arrived. “Poison,” featuring The Weeknd, is the first single for Aaliyah’s long-awaited posthumous album, Unstoppable, which is slated to drop in 2022. The single, released via Blackground Records 2.0 and Empire, is also the first single from the “Princess of R&B”—who died in August 2001—in nearly a decade when Drake and Noah “40” Shebib assisted with the song “Enough Said” in 2012. Aaliyah’s uncle and Blackground founder Barry Hankerson, founder of Blackground Records, told Billboard, “I wanted her adoring fans to get a special gift before the holidays and felt it was the perfect time to release a never-before-heard offering.” It definitely feels like a present. FKA Twigs released a stunning visual for her latest single “Tears In The Club,” featuring Toronto crooner, The Weeknd. The track arrives less than a month after FKA Twigs shared “Measure of a Man” with West London rapper Central Cee, which will be included on The King’s Man soundtrack releasing on Dec. 22. That track released shortly before she told fans she was preparing to release a mixtape that was “really deep, emotional, and honest,” so perhaps “Tears In The Club” is the vibe we can expect for the upcoming project. We’re not mad at that. [artist info]
When you bring together two of the biggest stars in Afrobeat music, it’s bound to be a magical experience. African giants Burna Boy and WizKid have teamed up yet again for a new track titled “B. d’Or.” The dance cut was produced by P2J and is inspired by the Ballon d’Or, an award that France Football presents to the best footballer. Earlier this month, the pair surprised fans when Burna Boy made an appearance at the final date of WizKidd’s three-night run at the O2 Arena in London. [artist info]
Other Worthy Mentions: Jhené Aiko, BAIRD, and Tierra Whack
Los Angeles’ very own, Jhené Aiko is helping us get into the holiday spirit with her with her romantic Christmas ballad “Wrap Me Up,” and Baltimore-raised, Los Angeles-based musician, Baird, shared an intoxicating visual for his single “Darkness of the Night.” Also, Philly rhymer Tierra Whack released a third EP titled R&B? this week, which arrives with a visual for the single “Heaven.”
