Altered Nancy Pelosi Videos Are All Over Social Media—and No One Seems to Care That They’re Faked

The future of politics just keeps getting uglier

Political social media just got even scummier. An altered video of a speech Nancy Pelosi gave Wednesday makes the House Speaker appear to be drunkenly slurring her words and generally unsteady—and one version has already been viewed over 1.4 million times.

The speech, in which Pelosi described to attendees at a Center for American Progress event how President Trump angrily stomped out of a White House meeting on infrastructure yesterday, has been slowed by roughly 75 percent, resulting in fake stammers and exaggerated blinking and facial tics, The Washington Post reports. Pelosi’s voice has also been modulated to compensate for the deepening effect the slowed-down video would produce.

One of the most alarming things about the videos—versions of which have spread all over Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter—is that they prove you don’t need cutting-edge tech to trick the feeble-minded.

“It is striking that such a simple manipulation can be so effective and believable to some,” UC Berkley computer science professor Hany Farid told the Post. “[T]his type of low-tech fake shows that there is a larger threat of misinformation campaigns—too many of us are willing to believe the worst in people that we disagree with.”

The paper also found fake Pelosi videos on “a YouTube channel called The American Mirror […] which is almost entirely dedicated to videos crafted to criticize or embarrass female Democratic leaders.” The channel has more than 30 million total views.

“Kyle Olson, who runs the channel, said he found it ‘interesting’ that ‘not a single reporter asks any questions when she suffers brain freezes.’ The videos, he added, ‘get hundreds of thousands of views because they speak for themselves: there is something not right with her.’”

Deputy Chief of Staff Drew Hamill told the Post, “We’re not going to comment on this sexist trash.”
