NOVEMBER 9, 2020 – The long-awaited Eagle Rock location of Hilltop Coffee and Kitchen has opened.
“I’m proud to be part of the team bringing Hilltop to Eagle Rock and hopefully helping creative people continue their own climb,” investor Issa Rae stated in an announcement of the opening.
Hilltop’s third outpost, the Eagle Rock location will have 100 square feet of distanced outdoor dining space for now, with a larger indoor dining area and bar seating for when health regulations allow.
DECEMBER 10, 2019 – Issa Rae is continuing to invest in her neighborhood, this time as co-owner and partner in a new location of Hilltop Coffee and Kitchen. The large, bright new Inglewood coffee shop is now open, offering all-day dining, live performances, and a space for the local creative community to gather.
“I’ve always wanted a coffee shop in my neighborhood,” Rae says in an Instagram video posted yesterday. “Coffee shops facilitate productivity in so many ways, they facilitate collaboration. I personally have done all of my writing in coffee shops. So it always disappointed me that there weren’t any that were Black-owned, people of color-owned in my neighborhood.”
To change that, Rae partnered with Ajay Relan and Yonnie Hagos of Hilltop Coffee. The duo opened the first Hilltop in the south L.A. neighborhood of View Park in 2018. A third location, in Eagle Rock, is also in the works.
In addition to standard coffee shop fare, the Inglewood Hilltop has a full food menu with sandwiches, toasts, bowls, and other dishes, served in a 3,500-square foot, two-story space. The cafe hires staff primarily from the local neighborhood and pays workers above minimum wage.
