Tune In
This month Los Angeles magazine profiles Herb Alpert, the nice Jewish boy from East L.A. who outsold the Beatles and this year released his 19th album at the age of 74. Here are some of our favorite songs from his extensive repertoire

Whipped Cream
This 1965 song features one of Alpert’s best trumpet performances and was a breakout hit for his Tijuana Brass ensemble. The sound is as playful and coquettish as the image of the shaving-cream-covered model that graced the cover of the Whipped Cream and Other Delights album.

1980
This is the first track on Rise, Alpert’s Grammy-winning 1979 album. With rolling drums and triumphant trumpet solos, it’s no wonder this tune was used for the worldwide telecast of the 1980 Olympics.

I Feel You
Alpert and his wife, singer Lani Hall, have been sharing their lives and musical passion for decades. This is a sampler of the couple’s 2011 album of the same name. The collaboration exemplifies Hall’s smooth, haunting vocals and Alpert’s masterful horn playing.
