Julius Shulman: Resources

BOOKS

Can’t afford an original Julius Shulman photograph? There are plenty of books with quality reproductions of his works. Like, more than 100. But only a handful are devoted solely to his work. Here’s our guide to the best of the lot:

JuliusbooksThree slip-cased volumes, 1008 pages, $300. Julius Shulman, Modernism Rediscovered is a big-ticket update to Modernism Rediscovered. Publisher Benedikt Taschen culled the selection or more than 400 images himself. Amazon regularly has it for under $200. [Taschen, 2007]

PLUS: See this video taken by Tiki guru Sven Kirsten of Shulman commenting on the finished work

Nicely written by Joseph Rosa, head of the Department of Architecture and Design at the Art Institute of Chicago, A Constructed View: The Architectural Photography of Julius Shulman  also boasts an opening essay by the late and revered architecture critic Esther McCoy. [Rizzoli, 1994]

The out-of-print but essential Julius Shulman: Architecture and its Photography was the first title in the Taschen canon, with a compelling autobiographical essay by Shulman and a preface by Frank Gehry. [Taschen, 1998]

In 2000 Balcony Press reissued Photographing Architecture and Interiors, Shulman’s 1962 book, with an introduction by Richard Neutra, that outlined the tricks of his trade. [Balcony Press, 2000]

A handsome volume dedicated to the photographer’s desert work, Julius Shulman: Palm Springs was co-written by Michael Stern, who curated the Shulman show at the Palm Springs Art Museum, and architectural historian Alan Hess. [Rizzoli, 2008]

Nazraeli Press in Portland has produced two lovely books with cloth covers devoted to Shulman’s work, limited to 1,000 copies each. The first, Vest Pocket Pictures came out in 2006 and chronicles the photographer’s earliest black-and-white work; the second, The Building of My Home and Studio, just came out and shows Shulman’s images of Laurel Canyon in the late 40s and the construction of his home, designed by Raphael Soriano. {Nazraeli Press, 2006 and 2008]
