Across the Golden Gate Bridge in Sausalito’s Fort Baker, Cavallo Point Lodge redefines what it means to be a national park lodge, with historic rooms in former officers’ quarters and soaring modern suites featuring bamboo and floor-to-ceiling panoramas of San Francisco. Chef Justin Everett serves rich lobster risotto and roasted chicken with smoked confit in the stellar restaurant, Murray Circle, and the cooking school uses local produce and seafood. The preschool set loves Fort Baker’s Bay Area Discovery Museum, but you can’t skip SF’s Golden Gate Park, where the living roof of the California Academy of Sciences looks as if it’s from Middle-earth and the angular de Young Museum, clad in copper mesh, from the future. For sustenance try a slice of fresh-baked organic sourdough pizza at Arizmendi Bakery; the pies vary from day to day, but favorites include one with roasted Yukon Gold potatoes, red onions, Asiago cheese, and rosemary oil.

For Frisco’s buzziest plates, go to Mission Chinese Food, which prepares ingredient-driven New Wave Asian in an old Chinese restaurant. Or try Flour + Water, where Thomas McNaughton makes primo rustic Italian centered on Neapolitan-style pizza, pastas, and whole-animal cooking.
