Georgia O’Keeffe spent nearly 50 years living and painting in Abiquiu, a tiny village an hour north of Santa Fe set amid the red rock bluffs and mesas of the Chama River Valley. You can stop at the Georgia O’Keeffe Home and Studio, an adobe with rustic viga ceilings and furniture by midcentury masters, before visiting Ghost Ranch, one of O’Keeffe’s earlier haunts and favorite subjects. These days it’s both a working ranch and a Presbyterian retreat, with hiking trails, anthropology and paleontology museums, and tours of locations where O’Keeffe painted. Back in town, order some trout on blue corn tortillas at Café Abiquiu or the sirloin green chile cheeseburgers at Bode’s General Store. About 20 minutes from Abiquiu, Rancho de San Juan is a luxury boutique hotel with kiva fireplaces in the casita-like rooms, which are spread out on the 111-acre property. Walk the trails and you’ll see the rancho’s awesome sandstone shrine carved into the side of a mesa.
