Truth Or Consequences, NM
The suborbital rocket rides that Virgin Galactic and Armadillo Aerospace plan to offer the masses (well, anyone who can spend as much as $200,000 for a ticket) won’t be lifting off anytime soon, but Spaceport America’s Virgin Galactic terminal in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, is already a hit. Sitting on a sun-baked plain, Norman Foster’s dark, saucer-shaped design is downright cinematic. T or C has been famous for its geothermal hot springs since Geronimo enjoyed them. Loosen up with a soak at the historic Sierra Grande Lodge & Spa; there’s more steeping to be done at Blackstone Hotsprings, a reinvigorated 1930s motor court. Ask for the Jetsons room, with its low-profile ’50s touches. While you’re in the past, order an aged steak at Los Arcos, a ’70s-style monument to surf and turf. You can travel even further back with an excursion to one of the ghost towns in the area.
