Grab a slice of sand and cozy up with a blanket for Huntington Beach’s oceanside film series. This weekend they’ve got Despicable Me 3 on tap; BYO beach chairs, or pop for a $49 VIP ticket (admits two) and you’ll be able to share a jumbo bean bag. There’s food and beverage on site, too, so no need to lug a cooler.
Monopoly is cool (or is it?), but MAINopoly sounds better. Head to Main Street in Santa Monica to get a taste of 20 different vendors that line the iconic street, from Bulletproof Coffee to Sweet Rose Creamery to Stella Barra Pizzeria. (That last one will be serving cookie bites, not pizza—but trust, you should not miss them.) Get your MAINopoly board stamped at each location, and pony up a few extra bucks to visit the Go To Jail VIP lounge with beer, curated cocktails, snacks, games, music, photo booth, and more. Proceeds from the event go towards Heal the Bay and Main Street’s Summer SOULstice festival.
Cajun & Blues Music Festival
It’s not exactly the Big Easy, but the Simi Valley is a helluva lot quicker to get to when you’re craving a bit of New Orleans. Zydeco bands, Mardi Gras parades, and jambalaya are on tap at this Creole-style celebration, plus a few less traditional performances—Eddie Money is headlining, and yes, he’s got both of your tickets to paradise.
Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith
Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, one of our favorite local musicians, brings her truckload of analog synthesizers and an album full of new songs to the Masonic Lodge concert space at Hollywood Forever Cemetery on May 24 and 25. To open the performances, she’ll be joined by Cool Maritime, a new music project from filmmaker and creative Sean Hellfritsch, making it a shoe-in for one of the best things to do in L.A. this weekend.
Four Dodgers Games
Is there anything better than a Memorial Day Weekend spent gorging yourself on Dodger Dogs and celebrating America’s Favorite Pasttime? Get super aggressive and go see four Dodgers games in a row as they take on the San Diego Padres (May 25, 26, 27) and the Philadelphia Phillies (May 28), or pick just one and save some time for the other cool things on this list. If you go the latter route, we’d recommend the Phillies game, because you’ll get to go home with a super neat Dodgers apron (you know, for future Memorial Day BBQs).
