I have covered polo for decades, and I must admit, I still don’t quite understand the game—maybe it is because I am always preoccupied by all of the fabulous people. I get that there are gorgeous horses and riders going back and forth hitting the ball to score goals, and at halftime you stomp down all of the divots, but when there is as much action off the field as there was on at the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic, it just doesn’t matter that I don’t know how many downs it takes to get into the end zone as long as I’m wearing a very big hat.
The facts: Polo player Nacho Figueras (the famous face of the Ralph Lauren ads) and his wife Delfina Blaquier along with the VP of Veuve Clicquot U.S. Vanessa Kay welcomed a crowd of about 5,000+ (lots of well-dressed folks) to Will Rogers State Historic Park. Team Black Watch challenged Team Veuve Clicquot, with Figueras’s Team Black Watch taking home the cup and beating Team Veuve Clicquot ten to seven. Figueras was named MVP.
The fun: Roem Baur (The Voice) sang a strong National Anthem, after which the famous faces piled on to the picnic grounds. Rashida Jones sat by Jesse Tyler Ferguson and his husband Justin Mikita, the three chatting most of the match. Rosario Dawson and pal Anna Faris shared a table and had some fun stomping the divots at the half. Tony Goldwyn was extremely popular with the ladies, getting stopped every two seconds by women who kept saying, “My husband will be so jealous,” as pals took cell phone snaps. Goldwyn was chatted up by Veuve’s Vanessa Kay for a good portion of the match when he wasn’t joking around with his Scandal nemesis…Scott Foley (did you see last night’s episode??). There was no shoving, accusations, or fast-paced speeches about Olivia Pope—just back slapping and smiles. Who else wore their best polo watching outfits? Christina Hendricks, Lauren Conrad, Joe Jonas, and Rachel Zoe, among many, many others.
