Steal This Weekend: From the Beach to the Bowl
This curated weekend is yours for the taking
Thursday, July 4: FOURTH OF JULY PARADE
Santa Monica’s Fourth of July Parade isn’t fancy, but it has a small-town charm that makes getting up and across the 405 early worthwhile (festivities begin at Pico and Main at 9:30 a.m.). The theme of this year’s processional is Who’s Your Hero? so I’m expecting home-made floats devoted to people and causes who inspire. The fact that the Ocean Park Association’s Web site for the event points to a YouTube tutorial on making a cape out of a T-shirt in two minutes? Worth ten points. There will be live music at The Victorian, 220 Fitness, Lula’s, and Edgemar Courtyard at the parade’s end, but I’ll probably grab a sandwich at Shoop’s and head straight for beach.
Saturday, July 6: BUGS BUNNY AT THE SYMPHONY II
Yes, I’m 31 years old. Yes, my dad is in his mid 60s. Who cares. You’re never too old for classic cartoons. We’ll spend a night watching Bugs, Elmer, Daffy, Porky, Wile, and Tweety play for laughs to original scores performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl. The first trip of the summer to the Bowl is always special, and I’m especially looking forward this year to stopping by the new wine bar before show time.
SUNDAY, July 7: THE SYCAMORE KITCHEN
Doing our weekly supermarket run got a lot more enjoyable when my husband and I started tacking on brunch at Karen Hatfield’s LaBrea eatery. I’ve stuck mostly to the Benedict, which are prepared with a twist (poached eggs are paired with honey-glazed pancetta and fried rosemary), but dine editor Lesley Bargar Suter says the croque madam is “faultless” so it might be time to indulge. It’s a holiday weekend, after all.
