Saddlerock Ranch Malibu
Home to Malibu Family Wines
Producers of Saddlerock and Semler wines
The Food Event 2013 is Los Angeles magazine's eighth annual culinary extravaganza. The day features great chefs, culinary experts, sommeliers, plus unlimited food, wine, and spirits—all in one place, for one price. Watch celebrity chefs in the demonstration kitchen and epicurean experts participate in panels in the Conversation Lounge. Restaurants are hand selected by our James Beard award-winning dine editor. The incredible rural setting, Saddlerock Ranch in Malibu, home to Semler and Saddlerock wines, sets this culinary event above others. The ranch boasts acres and acres of natural beauty, vineyards, rolling hills, animals like llamas and zebras, and space to spread out and relax for a true escape from the city, but with just a short drive. So come dressed casual -- comfortable shoes are a must -- and please leave the pets and kids at home. Unfortunately for the little ones, the event is 21+ only. Be sure to purchase tickets early this year. The event is becoming very popular and will sell out! Hope to see you there!

Nestled deep in Malibu's Santa Monica Mountains is the sprawling 1,000-acre Saddlerock Ranch, home to Semler and Malibu Family Wines. Visitors may recognize the vineyard and unusual rock formations from over 100 movies, commercials and television shows filmed here. The estate is also home to dozens of horses and exotic animals and a popular weekend setting for weddings and special events.
Today, the vineyards consist of approximately 60,000 vines on 65 acres, with expansion plans to reach 100,000 vines. With the high altitude and separation from the coast, along with an ideal blend of weather conditions and rich, rocky soil, it's the perfect environment for growing premium wine grapes.
As a joint family endeavor between the Semler Family and the DeJoria Family, Malibu Family Wines takes great pride in the gentle-handling, traditional techniques that give our wines their special character. We hope you enjoy their wines as much as they enjoy creating them!
The rich, fascinating history of Saddlerock Ranch began more than three centuries ago when the vast expanse of land surrounding the Santa Monica Mountains was part of the original Spanish Land Grant. The area of more than 200,000 acres was a perfect site for sheep and cattle, and up until the 1930's, was known as El Malibu. Local caves are filled with ancient pictographs painted by the Chumash Indians, dating back to the Portola Expedition of 1769. The beautiful pictographs of this culture have become very rare due to erosion and weathering, but some of the most well preserved examples remain on the ranch and have been studied by archeologists and photographed for books on the subject.
Today, the Semler Family owns Saddlerock Ranch. Ronnie and Lisa Semler, along with their nine children, have lived on the ranch for over twenty-seven years.
Perfectly positioned at the crest of the Santa Monica Mountains, the vineyards are indeed special. The rocky terrain and steep south facing slopes provide the perfect environment for growing premium wine grapes. Planting started in 1997 with 14 acres of Cabernet and Merlot. Today the hillside vineyards consist of approximately 60,000 vines on 65 acres and we are well on the way to reaching a goal of 100 acres. Malibu Family Wines has eight varietals planted, they include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Malbec, Grenache, Mouvedre and Viognier. The last four varietals are used for blending purposes.
