Beach Bag Essentials
These beauty picks will keep you safe and smelling good in the summer sun
Victoria’s Secret Body Prep Smoothing Scrub ($18)
My legs get an energetic rubdown with this stuff before I head out—it primes the legs for my SPF, keeps the skin from flaking and tanning unevenly, and has a tropical citrusy scent.
In Fiore Luxury Bikini Balm ($45)
Newly waxed or lasered skin MUST be protected from the sun for the first few days. And, ladies, we always get our treatments the day before a beach jaunt. This rose-scented balm melts so quickly into skin, I looked twice to see if I needed more. The organic chamomile oil promotes healing of the hypersensitive bikini line.
EltaMD UV Daily Broad-Spectrum SPF 40 ($26)
I skip the foundations and BB creams for the tinted version of this fantastic SPF. Matte? Yes. Hydrating? Absolutely. It goes on like a face lotion, but the SPF is high enough for incidental exposure and sinks in quickly without any chalky residue. A non-tinted version is also available.
Crabtree & Evelyn Seaside Resort Nail Collection ($6)
Forget the double-digit priced polishes. C&E’s lacquers last just as long as those versions. At $6 a bottle, these pretty pearlescent shades will have me changing up the color every weekend.
Tocca Simone ($68)
Summer scents mean I ditch the heavy orientals and vanillas. Tocca’s newest launch is like sunshine in a bottle. The cheerfully sweet, watery floral has tropical frangipani paired with a twist of juicy watermelon, though it’s softened with a woodsy base. Tocca always scores for being subtle but full of fresh energy.
Lavett & Chin Sea Salt Texturizing Mist ($30)
Sea salts are problematic for finer hair types like me. I want tousled, but not greasy. I finally got it right with this Maris salt mist, which smells intensely of essential oils. I just spray, scrunch, and air dry. I get waves and volume that seriously look like a Victoria Secret model without trying. Well, at least I think so.
Bobbi Brown 'beach' Body Oil ($31)
If you need hydration and a non-sticky alternative to body lotion, this is my pick. I smell a very soft tiare scent from a hefty pour, but not enough to compete with any fragrance. The best part is how it leaves the legs with a healthy-looking shine from the olive, sesame, and avocado oils.
Clarins Sunscreen Care Oil Spray SPF 30 for Skin & Hair ($35)
Too often we slather the sunscreen on the legs, arms, and face, but forget about the hair and tender scalp underneath. Why does hair need sunscreen? The rays cause the cuticles to open, meaning your pricey highlights will fade faster than it would naturally. I like how this non-greasy spray double downs as a filter for the vulnerable locks and the tops of the feet, another spot we forget to protect.
Earth Therapeutics Tree Tea Oil Foot Wipes ($7)
I keep these cool cleaning wipes handy because I don’t want to have to worry about ruining a pair of pricey toe ring sandals from Anthropologie and getting the car vacuumed right away. A bonus: It helps clean the pooch’s paws, too.
I’m a beach bunny, but the difference between me and most other sun-lovers you probably know is that I’ll actually pack a huge beauty haul in my Burberry tote to drag onto the incredibly beautiful walkways of Summerland. A bit high maintenance, you think?
Well, I’m not exactly known for being a no-frills type of girl. But I’m not talking about glosses and lotions here. I’m talking about beauty hacks that help me out with my hot-weather hair meltdowns and dry skin emergencies that I inevitably end up suffering through. While I don’t want to get all pedantic about why you should be using an SPF, I will say it’s a good thing I haven’t found a favorite because every year the technology behind these types of products and their FDA-approved ingredients just keep getting better. And while I’m not totally opposed to scrunching my beachy hair with some real seawater, why not use a sea salt spray that also smells pretty?
How’s this for a morning laze on the beach: a real sunscreen that doubles as a matte BB cream, a yummy-smelling body oil that keeps your skin hydrated well past the 10 a.m. sunburn hour, and an organic bikini balm to temper the tenderness and irritation on recently lasered skin up top or waaayyy down there. Summer’s heat is already here if you’re craving a quick trip to the beach. Here are some of awesome beach bag essentials inspired by the warm, salted scents of the splashy sea that will ensure savvy sun seekers stay sunburn free.
