Los Angeles provided a stark contrast to the bucolic English countryside Hockney grew up in. The prolific artist landed in L.A. in the late ’70s to create work—including now-iconic paintings and photo-collages of desert landscapes and backyard swimming pools—that is quintessentially Californian.
