Sponsored L.A. Chargers
Los Angeles Chargers Making an Impact in L.A.–Both On and Off the Field
The team’s Super Bowl aspirations are rivaled only by its commitment to the community
A good competition brings out the best in everyone, as the L.A. Chargers demonstrate every time they push themselves to the limit to trounce their opponents. That’s why the team is sponsoring our first-ever Burger Bracket, an online competition to identify the best burger in the city. Food editor Garrett Snyder curated a list of 16 local restaurants that make great burgers, and each week, voters are narrowing the field. When you vote for your favorite L.A. burger, you’re entered into a random drawing to win weekly prizes, including tickets to our annual Burgers Bourbon + Beer celebration featuring the Chargers Tailgate Lounge.
While the Los Angeles Chargers are best known for their actions on the gridiron, they’re equally impressive off the field. When they’re not focused on tackling the other team, the Chargers shift their attention to giving back to the community – a central tenant of the team’s “Fight for LA.” The team’s players devote their personal strength and powerful presence toward showing kindness and generosity to kids and families in need throughout Los Angeles and Southern California. From Dan Fouts and LaDainian Tomlinson to Philip Rivers and Melvin Gordon, the players feel fortunate for everything they’ve achieved, and they welcome opportunities to share their success with the community.
The Spanos family, the Chargers’ longtime owners, have earned recognition as one of the NFL’s most philanthropic families. As a third-generation family owned and operated business, with a deep and authentic commitment to community involvement, the Chargers have contributed tens of millions of dollars to community programs across Los Angeles, San Diego, Orange, Riverside, and Imperial counties. The entire Chargers organization—from the players to the coaches and staff—share the Spanos family’s passion for giving back.
“Our family’s patriarch, my grandfather Alex, was merely looking for a way to provide for his family back in 1951 when he took out an $800 loan to sell bologna sandwiches,” said Chargers President of Business Operation A.G. Spanos. “He parlayed that, improbably, into owning an NFL franchise a little more than 30 years later. Given his story truly is the embodiment of the ‘American Dream,’ we feel it is extremely important, as a family and an organization, to pay it forward. Whether it’s helping people who have faced hardship get back on their feet so they too can realize their own dreams or it’s simply creating opportunity where opportunity may not have existed, we want the Los Angeles Chargers to be synonymous with the commitment to making our community a better place.”
The Chargers back a wide range of programs relating to fitness, family, and football. For example, Chargers Champions provide grants for athletic and nutritional programs in public schools. To date, more than 125 projects have been funded through the program, totaling close to $6 million. The team also supports L.A.’s Summer Night Lights program in partnership with L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti’s Office of Gang Reduction and Youth Development (“GRYD”) — which reduces gang violence by keeping recreation centers and parks open late and adding programming in the summer.
Each fall, the Chargers organize a back-to-school shoe distribution where players work one-on-one with kids in need to help them pick out a new pair of shoes and a school backpack. More than 20,000 pairs of shoes have been distributed to students in local schools to help them kick off the new school year with confidence and style.
The Los Angeles Chargers take their commitment to the community very seriously, and they look forward to continued involvement in the years to come.
