Cocktails and More at This Sunday’s Art Beyond the Glass III

Get thirsty, my friends

      This year’s L.A. cocktail community blowout, Art Beyond the Glass, is returning to the scene of the crime as it celebrates its third year at Sadie Kitchen & Lounge, where it first held its inaugural event. This annual fundraiser/party, founded and curated by Thirsty in L.A. blogger Daniel Djang and bartender Zahra Bates, has demonstrated time and again that bartenders are more than just the skilled individuals bringing you liquid joy from behind the stick. They’re DJs, painters, photographers, rockstars, and even magicians.

      And this Sunday the 29th you’ll get to see them in action with live performances by singers Kiowa Bryan (Eveleigh), Luke Ford (Seven Grand) and Erik Trickett (Caña Rum Bar); Higher Flux featuring Ali Huleisy (Melrose Umbrella Co.) and Robbie Gregg (Copa D'Oro); Matt Mann & The Shine Runners featuring Josh Curtis (Copa D'Oro); magic by Joshua Lucas (Honeycut) and Jordan Gold (littlefork). Or take home some bartender art which will be on sale as well as up for bid in the silent auction. By the way, the silent auction items includes drinks and hangout time with the city's most influential bar owners: Cedd Moses, Jared Meisler, Proprietors LLC, and Tello-Demarest Liquid Assets. Dibs!

      Naturally there will be lots to drink with 11 bartender teams (ABTG’s largest group yet) representing the liquor sponsors. You’ll enjoy cocktails by returning superstar ‘tenders like Julian Cox (Soigné Group), Beau Du Bois (The Corner Door), Dave Whitton (Sunset Marquis), Karen Grill (Bestia), and Giovanni Martinez (Sadie); as well as ABTG first-timers like Josh Goldman (Soigné Group), Alex Straus (The Bon Vivants), Jeremy Lake (Crossroads), and Brian Summers (Black Market Liquor Bar).

      Here’s just a sample of what you’ll be drinking:

      “The Bayou Black (Flash Barrel-Aged)” by Cory James (Eveleigh): Griff's Cowboy Whiskey, Park VS Cognac, Punt e Mes, Cherry Heering, Miracle Mile Sour Cherry Bitters, Angostura Bitters

      “Buffalo Stance” by Christine Wiseman (La Descarga): Griff's Cowboy Whiskey, cherry reduction syrup, lime juice, topped with a Giffard Vanille de Madagascar and Coke foam

      “Westward Ho (Sorbet)” by Elizabeth Mickiewicz (Sadie): Griff's Cowboy Whiskey, Toasted Pecan Griff's Honey Reduction Syrup, fresh lemon juice, lemon zest, topped with Miracle Mile Chocolate Chili Bitters

      “Apple & Whore'anges” by Chris Day (Tipple & Brine): Griff's Cowboy Whiskey, Giffard Vanille de Madagascar, Pierre Ferrand Dry Curaçao, Miracle Mile Chocolate Chili Bitters

      "Aloha, Amigo!" by Kelly Merrell (Trader Sam's Enchanted Tiki Bar): Altos Reposado Tequila, orgeat, lime juice, Ancho Reyes, agave nectar, Negra Modelo, Chinese Bitters

      Unnamed by Karen Grill (Bestia): Plymouth Navy Strength Gin, sweet vermouth, velvet falernum, lemon juice, lime juice, simple syrup

      “Mexican Spa Day” by Max Kestenbaum (Cocktail Academy): La Niña del Mezcal, mango juice, lime juice, agave, muddled cucumber

      “Grasshopper Redo” by Una Green (Melrose Umbrella Co.) and Mandolyn McIntyre (Sotto): Auchentoshen American Wood Scotch, Giffard Creme de Menthe, and Creme de Cacao ice cream

      "Sex on the Beach Odder Pops" by Devon Espinosa: Absolut Elyx, peaches, cranberries

      Tickets are $50 and all-inclusive, meaning all the cocktails you can handle as well as bar bites from Sadie and Guelaguetza, which will also have its MicheMobil drink truck serving Micheladas and Negro Modelo on site.

      All proceeds from Art Beyond the Glass III will help restore Luchas del Mundo (Struggles of the World), a landmark mural created for the 1984 Olympics by famed artist Willie Herrón lll. Last year’s event raised $13,700 for Art Share L.A.
