Warm Your Cold A** Up with National Hot Buttered Rum Day

Because every day should be a drinking holiday

This Thursday is National Hot Buttered Rum Day (yes, there really is a holiday for everything), and it’s your chance to celebrate the colonial beverage which saved 17th century New Englanders from sobriety the cold as several local venues will be doing up drink specials for the occasion. It’s a big deal considering L.A. isn’t really a “hot cocktail” city OR a butter town for that matter. So take advantage and cozy up to one of these nontraditional beauties or, if you don’t feel like venturing out into the 40-degree night, try the traditional recipe we got from 1886 Bar below.

By the way, if rum isn’t your thing, just wait for January 25th when it’s National Irish Coffee Day.

Caña Rum Bar downtown will be serving up an old family recipe, courtesy of bartender Danielle Crouch’s mom. The Mexican-style Hot Buttered Rum—with a kick of chipotle, cacao, and Mexican rum—will be going for $9 all night.

At Cole’s, bartenders Brent Falco and Zahra Bates (formerly of Providence) collaborated on the special of the day, “Cole & Honey,” ($8 happy hour, $11 after) a concoction of brown butter, Appleton 12-year rum, hot water, Allspice Dram milk and honey foam, and grated nutmeg on top. Like Mom used to make!

Drago Centro’s “The Soul of Mayahuel” cocktail ($12)—off the downtown bar’s winter drink menu—is a savory tequila take on the hot buttered rum, made with reposado tequila, sage and black peppercorn-infused agave nectar, orange blossom water, hot water, and brown butter foam.

Silver Lake Spanish restaurant El Cid has a “Hot n Creamy Sailor” ($10) for you. Get up on this mix of Sailor Jerry spiced rum and Laura Ann's Jams’ Maple Pumpkin Butter topped with whipped cream and organic spiced sugar.

Just in case warm weather returns, downtown’s One-Eyed Gypsy is doing up a hot buttered rum-vanilla ice cream float called, wait for it, “Hot Rum Butter Face” ($8). For the affogato-style drink, the hot rum mix—Sailor Jerry rum, sweet cream butter, vanilla, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, demerara sugar—is poured over a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

In Hollywood, Sadie bartender Giovanni Martinez went afield of the beaten butter rum path with his chartreuse cocktail. The delicious mingling of winter spiced syrup, Green Chartreuse, hot water, and butter will be $10.

It was sheer coincidence that Tasting Kitchen is debuting its house Hot Buttered Rum cocktail ($12) on its winter cocktail list the same time the nation is celebrating the cozy concoction. The Venice restaurant’s version is a mix of dark rum, housemade butter batter, apple butter, fresh-pressed ginger, Allspice Dram, hot water, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and dark brown sugar.

The Spare Room in Hollywood’s mixtress Naomi Schimek created “Shhh... Just Look Pretty” for the holiday. The cocktail of chocolate black tea-infused rum, caramel syrup, Angostura and orange bitters, topped with whipped Chartreuse butter will be going for $12.

If you want to celebrate Hot Buttered Rum Day today, tomorrow and through the rest of winter, Comme Ça’s “Hot Buttered Rum”—made with honey, Cruzan Black Strap rum, and hot water, topped with a pad of butter and nutmeg—is sticking around for a bit on its seasonal menu.

Pasadena’s 1886 Bar at the Raymond is keeping things old school with its simple, traditional, and oh-so-delicious Hot Buttered Rum ($12). Oh look... and they were kind enough to share their recipe!

3/4 oz honey (about 1 tablespoon)
1 1/2 oz aged rum
