What to Wear There: Trails Café

Making the case for a cape in the woods

Trails Cafe in Griffith Park is one of my favorite places to go when I want to commune with nature and get a caffeine fix at the same time. Whenever I'm there I always end up wondering why don't I find myself there more often. Not only do they serve snake dogs (sausage wrapped in puff pastry) and delicious coffee, although that might be my version of a menu in Heaven, but foliage—and I don’t mean just palm trees—abounds. Let’s put it this way: Trails is a great place to go when you are craving an east coast fix but can’t afford the plane ticket.

On a recent visit to the café I wore my wool cape from Lovers and Friends’ collaboration with celebrity stylist Monica Rose. Full disclosure: it was sent to me by their lovely PR team and has been my constant companion ever since. I had no idea I needed a cape so badly until I had one. A silk blouse from Nicole Miller and quilted faux leather skirt from Express went underneath. I’ve been wearing black a lot lately, maybe to commemorate the death of 2013, or perhaps to combat all the parties and merriment of last month.

I rounded out the outfit with some high-heeled, patent leather Mary Jane’s I found on sale at Macy’s. (Hey, if you’re taking a Saturday stroll down 3rd street you may as well keep going till you hit the Beverly Center. The shoe section at the Macy’s there is unexpectedly tight.) Such a dramatic look might seem out of place in Griffith Park and it very well may be, but why not stand out? I’m a big believer in dressing not for the occasion but for what feels good to you in the moment. That’s how to develop personal style. Be the girl who wears a cape and a red lip to grab coffee in L.A.’s wilderness. I guarantee it will make the day feel more special. Plus, you never know who you might run into.
