What to Wear There: Ojai Valley Inn and Spa

A little touch of luxury is called for when lounging poolside with a Bloody Mary

Packing for a wedding weekend can be a challenge. Every piece has to be respectable enough for the occasion, but versatile enough to take you from a casual event to a dressier one with ease—and to fit in a suitcase without getting crumpled. Our friends Blythe and Jim were married this past weekend at the Ojai Valley Inn and Spa, and I decided on a layered ensemble for the farewell brunch, which turned into a long day of lounging poolside, beaucoodles of Bloody Marys, and inside jokes with great friends.

The Ojai Valley Inn is the epitome of relaxed luxury, so I opted for something a little classier than denim cutoffs and Vans—my traditional pool duds. I decided on the more conservative Étoile Isabel Marant army-green, knee-length skirt paired with a striped American Apparel tank and scarf. (Stripes are always a good choice this time of year, because they make you feel like you’re on a sailboat.) I added another layer with this scarf from Ugg Australia, and metallic sandals and a black bucket bag for a little bit of whimsy. Side note: I always wear a good Panama hat in addition to my sunnies when I’m spending the afternoon outside—pearls of wisdom from my dermatologist. Of course, underneath it all, I had on a classic black string bikini for that inevitable dip. It was the perfect, slightly preppy pool deck ensemble, and all the layers came in handy for that slow striptease into the water: First my feet, then my legs, and oh, what the hell, I’ll put my head under.

It may be still snowing in NYC but us Angelenos are ready for summer, big time. Happy pooling, and congrats, Blythe and Jim!
