There are a ton of great coffee places within walking distance of my home in what I call the Hollywood Bump (we are definitely on an incline, just not officially in the Hills). My latest favorite? The Coffee Commissary at Siren Studios. It's the perfect place to stroll with my maltipoo, Sid, on a Sunday afternoon. The decor is modern woodsy, it's never too crowded, there's indoor/outdoor seating and free Wi-Fi, and they must set the dial to Sirius’ ’80s New Wave station, because I’m always hearing Morrissey and the Violent Femmes.
Siren Studios is a fashion-photography studio, so the vibe here is a little too cool for school, but after living in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Paris, I've come to find that oddly comforting. If I'm not worried that everyone around me is cooler than I am, something doesn't feel right. Luckily, baristas at the Commissary seem pretty confident of their superiority, and celebs like Nick Kroll roam about (is Nick Kroll officially a celeb yet?).
Either way, you want your look to say, "Don't talk to me unless you're Nick Kroll." I went on a recent Sunday and struck what I hope was a balance of casual sophistication in my favorite Current Elliot skinny jeans, a Southern California-inspired pink Equipment blouse with a palm tree print, and Oliver Peoples sunnies. I also wore my black-and-gold Puma wedge sneakers, which are miraculously more comfortable than flats, and to finish it all off, my black Zara blazer.
A brief history of that blazer: Two pilot seasons ago, I was auditioning for the part of FBI agent Jennifer Mason in The Following, so I searched high and low for the perfect special-agent blazer. After spying a beautiful but pricey one from Theory, I found this great fitted number at Zara. Sadly, I didn't get the job—but I've gotten a ton of use out of the blazer! It pulls every outfit together, even if I'm just hoping to bump into Nick Kroll running out for coffee.
