Pretty in Pink

This month's sophisticated twist on that girliest of colors

My younger self had no problem with pink. Every month would start with a hustle to my local M.A.C. counter, which offered the widest spectrum of all things pink: nails, lips, eyes, you name it. I was overwhelmed with the possibilities, and plunked down a good chunk of change for bubble-gum, glitter-laced lip balm to slick across my lips or a wild streak of matte fuchsia to pair with an electric-blue liquid liner.

My older self, on the other hand, has become wary of how to wear the right pink. Back in the day, most pink products were limited to saccharine-sweet finishes that made me overthink the look. Is my carnation gloss too disco? Is this poppy blush too old lady? And no one knew how to achieve the perfect pink shade on olive-skinned girls like myself.

But why dwell in the past? Today, I see a myriad of pinks available in so many wearable textures. With spring just around the corner, there’s no time to worry if pastels are too pale. Fortunately, this season’s beauty options are so sheer and stunning that they complement just about any look, whether it’s a dramatic black cat-eye or a soft, neutrally balanced palette with a peep of color. Check out these unusually versatile products, which offer a modern twist to the favored ultra-feminine shade without making you look too girly-girly.
