Salvatore Ferragamo’s timeless Vara—their mid-heel box-toed shoe bedecked with a grosgrain bow and gold plaque—turns 35 this year, and to celebrate, they’re releasing a digital collection of portraits of women whose styles are just as iconic as the shoe.
The project, L’Icona, was shot by photographer Claiborne Swanson Frank and features 20 women, including Camilla Belle, Jessica Hart and Miroslava Duma. The women are all shot in their choice of customized classic Varas or Varinas, a ballet flat offspring of the shoe that came about in 2007. With the release of the portrait collection on May 1, fans of the Vara will be able to custom order the shoe for the first time online.
The Vara is the kind of shoe we’d want to slip on with everything from skinny jeans to Givenchy dresses a la Audrey Hepburn, and thanks to Sal’s studying anatomy at USC, the shoes are engineered to be comfortable enough to do just that.
