Character Study: Marcello Mastroianni in 8 1/2

Style editor Linda Immediato takes requests— and puts together modern looks based on characters (real and imagined) that have captured the sartorial aspirations of friends, readers, and colleagues.

This week, the request comes from Bridesmaids director Paul Feig: Marcello Mastroianni in Fellini's 8 1/2 (1963):

"If there's one person who inspired my personal style— it's Marcello Mastroianni in 8 1/2. I've always dressed in a suit and a tie. I've always been a fan of that period of suits with a thin tie. Sadly, Mad Men came and sort of took that style and made it into 'Mad Men style.' Ironically, when I went in to direct my first episode of Mad Men, they were like 'casting’s down the hall.' But in that era's look, no one has ever looked better than Mastroianni—black suit, thin black tie, white shirt, those glasses! He was the one. That was my image, as a kid, of what a director looked like. And he sure looked good."

MY STYLE NOTES: I chose this black "Martini-Fit" Dolce & Gabbana suit, because a.) it's Italian and b.) Domenico Dolce was actually inspired by another Fellini film starring Mastroianni— La Dolce Vita— when he designed the "Martini" slim fit. I had to do some digging to figure out what that metal bar across Mastroianni's lapel was—it's the T-bar of a half-Albert (or half-hunter) pocket watch. Traditionally, the T-bar was put through a buttonhole on a vest and the watch went in a pant pocket. Mastroianni tucked the T- bar through a loop in his lapel and hung the watch in his jacket's breast pocket. The most difficult thing to track down was his eyeglasses. There are blogs and forums devoted to finding those exact frames. So far, no one has unearthed the exact maker and model. I tried to go with the Italian theme, but this pair by Warby Parker was as close as I could find.

Dolce & Gabbana "Martini-Fit" suit and skinny silk tie and Charvet button down all available at Mr. Porter.com Jean Pierre of Switzerland half hunter pocket watch, "Winston" frames in "Revolver Black" by Warby Parker.
