Behind The Scenes: Los Angeles Magazine's Sex Issue Cover Shoot

When I was first asked to style the models for our sex issue cover shoot, I thought I had better sit down with deputy editor Nancy Miller to find out if this meant La Perla or Frederick's of Hollywood. Luckily, the answer was neither. Miller, the mastermind behind our "Sex in L.A." package (on newsstands now), had a pretty clear idea of what she wanted the October cover to convey. Like the steamy package itself, she wanted it to be "sexy, hot, and urban." Chris Burden's Urban Light installation at LACMA was the location for the shoot. I immediately pictured our female model Tana Elise McFarlane in a body-con dress with a soft motorcycle jacket and ankle boots. For Patrick Cain, our male model, I thought skinny jeans, a loose knit black sweater, a soft buttery leather baseball jacket, and leather boots. I pulled over a dozen different looks for each of them. After a lengthy fitting, we settled on an Herve Leger purple bangage dress with a Fifteen-Twenty metallic leather moto jacket, and Calleen Cordero peep-toe booties and leather cuff for Tana. And for Patrick, a pair of coated skinny jeans from the G-Star-Skrillex collaboration with an AllSaints black knitted hoodie, grey leather jacket, and boots did the trick. Ours wasn't the only photoshoot taking place at the Urban Light installation—it must be the most photographed spot in town.
