How Stuff's Made: Calleen Cordero Shoes

Last week the L.A. Times  dubbed shoe designer Calleen Cordero the "Queen of Studs." For over a decade Cordero has been carving out a niche for herself with her signature leather-studded, wooden-heeled shoes. Her mission since the get-go has been to continue L.A.'s legacy as the birthplace of quality, hand-crafted, wooden-heeled shoes, which began in the '70s. Last year we invited Cordero to sit in on a panel discussion for our Made in L.A. fashion feature, she told the crowd that she depends heavily on the artisans who work in her North Hollywood factory and lamented that their skills aren't being passed down to younger generations. Many of the workers have been with Cordero for over 10 years, since she launched her eponymous line, and she knows the name of every single employee—and the names of their husbands, wives, and children. She invited us to visit her factory and see for ourselves what handmade really means. Click through the slideshow above and take a tour yourself.
