Men and women vying for $5,000 gift cards to the Westfield Santa Anita Mall donned their best duds and hats for the Fedoras and Fascinators Contest at the Breeders' Cup, held at the Santa Anita Racetrack this weekend. And the competition was fierce. Directly, below is a photo montage of the two winners (had to show the front and back of the winning fascinator)! Winner Gemma Hassett is an exchange student from the University of Limerick in Ireland currently studying at Cal State Long Beach. Her fascinator was designed by her friend Fiona Mangan, a one time architect who became a milliner (a recession-caused career switch). "From the front, a conservative headpiece," said Hassett explaining her fascinator, "but to the back is where the party is at, the Leprechaun’s little crock of gold - Neon orange swirls contrasting the classic gold roses. Fashion at the races is huge in Ireland and women spend a lot of money picking out their outfit," said Hassett. "I on the other hand am a student I couldn't afford to splash out so I bought my dress in Ross Dress for Less for $21.99 and assessories for about $40 in Forever 21 on Friday. I am so so happy as I am not the thinnest or smallest girl on the street, I was worried that I wouldn't be what the judges were looking for as California is bursting with beautiful modelesque like women, but I love my style and being creative with it." We thought she looked gorgeous and loved her style and creativity, as well. Now, she's got $5,000 to get splashy with!
