Every now and then something shows up in the mail and causes a bit of buzz around the office, like these two Halloween-perfect perfumes:
“Funeral Home” by Demeter Fragrance Library
Demeter Fragrance Company is a New York Company that packages idealized representations of everyday scents. “Funeral Home” is described as, “Classic white flowers including lilies, carnations, gladiolas and chrysanthemum blend together beautifully with stems, leaves a hint of mahogany and a touch of oriental carpet.” Nothing, however, nails the smell better than its name, which beat “Flower Show” for the title.
One editor said, “It smells like loss, grief, and lilies.” Another compared it to “embalming fluid,” while my neighbor said, “I would never wear it now that I know what it’s called.”
The fragrance is available online with more appealing Halloween scents such as “Tootsie Roll” and “Pumpkin Pie.”
“Fame” by Lady Gaga
Lada Gaga is known for her boundless creative expression--it's no surprise that her first fragrance boasts an innovation in eau de parfum technology: the fluid is black “like the soul of fame” but turns clear once airborne. It also avoids the traditional pyramidal structure of most perfumes and instead relies on “push-pull technology,” which allows multiple ingredients to interact without hierarchy.
Three elements compose the scent: dark, sensual, and light. The dark element is created by Belladonna, a deadly nightshade whose toxic berries have “created dark beauty for time eternal.” The sensual element is created by an opulent fusion of “dripping honey and luscious apricot nectar brushed with saffron.” Finally, the light element of crushed Tiger Orchid and Jasmine Sambac “tops the scent with bruised beauty.” These three elements are also the themes in the futuristic sci-fi thriller meets promotion video by Steven Klein (bottom).
One editor said, “It smells like dryer sheets and jawbreakers,” while another stated, “I love the black liquid, but the smell is awful. Remember Sex Panther from Anchorman?”
The fragrance was released in September and is currently available online and at retailers worldwide.
